The SAFR seeks to address the existing market challenge for an annulus fibrosus repair device to prevent the extrusion of nucleus pulposus material that occurs during any minimally invasive discectomy treatment or surgical needle puncture to the Annulus Fibrosus. OrthoSon aims to bring to market an innovative, disruptively simple solution of UK origin that enables the repair of these annulus fibrosus defects with a much greater efficacy rate than is currently available from competitor technology today and at a lower cost.OrthoSon is a rapidly developing, well-funded company, spun out of the University of Oxford with a mission to alleviate back pain, the largest cause of global disability, by using technology to restore the degenerated intervertebral disc. SAFR is a new product, complementary to OrthoSon's mission, that addresses another global clinical unmet need. With OrthoSon as lead and responsible for the overall development and commercialisation of the device, project partners Imperial College London, leveraging their specialist spinal implant testing facility, will develop the testing process and evaluate findings; while East Midlands Spine, a specialist spinal treatment and consultancy company, will provide clinical input on device design.
