Understanding the flight physics is paramount for success of every aircraft design. Currently, there are 750+ concepts of advance air mobility (AAM) aircraft, but none of them has been deployed into service yet. This is due to the lack of flight physics knowledge among AAM community, hence resulting in continuous postponement of their deployment. The University of Nottingham (UoN) will create and deliver an advanced course on flight physics, i.e. flight dynamics and flight performance, of AAM aircraft to address the above challenge. The course will be primarily delivered as an advanced undergraduate course for the Aerospace engineering students at UoN. It will also be delivered as a continuous professional development (CPD) course for industry and interested stakeholders. The course will consist of lectures, seminars and flight simulator sessions, and will be based on modelling electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. The outstanding component of the course will be piloted simulation trials of the eVTOL aircraft in the UoN Alsim 250 flight simulator. This activity will provide a sense of reality and a better understanding of how various modifications to an eVTOL aircraft impact pilot perception and aircraft performance. The team of experienced UoN academics will develop a set of lectures that will cover: 1) flight physics of eVTOL aircraft, 2) impact of various novel systems, e.g. electric propulsion, on flying and handling qualities (pilot perception) of eVTOL aircraft, and 3) modelling and simulation techniques enabling course participants to create and/or adjust numerical eVTOL models to their needs. Each lecture will be supported by a practical seminar, built around a case study using a problem-based learning. Finally, the flight simulator sessions will provide experiential learning by allowing course participants to pilot eVTOL aircraft in the flight simulator. This learning cycle will ensure the best learning experience for each participant. As part of the project, the MATLAB/Simulink-based eVTOL aircraft model will be programmed into the flight simulator. Primarily this will supplement the course. This will also create a state-of-the-art eVTOL research and simulation platform in the UK that will further enhance UoN's flight-related research activities, as well as developing the skills pipeline and industry support in the critical field of flight physics.
