METALS IN BI0LOGY GORDON CONFERENCE

DESCRIPTION: Funds are requested to support the travel of participants to the Metals in Biology Gordon Conference (MIB-GRC) to be held January 18-22, 1998, at the Sheraton Four Points Harbortown Hotel, Ventura, CA. This multidisciplinary conference is generally considered to be the premiere small meeting covering the fields of metallobiochemistry and bioinorganic chemistry. Since 1962, these meetings have been a regular forum for the presentation and discussion of forefront research covering all aspects of the roles in metal ions in biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, and medicine. The popularity of this meeting led to a change from biennial to an annual calendar starting in January 1987. The meeting remains over-subscribed, despite the greater frequency. The topics to be emphasized for 1998 include: (1) Nitrogen and Sulfur Bioinorganic Chemistry; (2) Iron-Sulfur Clusters: Structures, Physical Properties, Redox and Other Roles; (3) Zinc Protease Structure, Mechanism and Pharmacological Implications; (4) Metal Regulation in Cells and Metal Processing; (5) Diagnostic and Therapeutic Agents; (6) Nitrogen Oxide Biology and Chemistry; (7) Dioxygen Processing and Chemistry; (8) Bioinorganic Chemistry & Disease States. Ample time will be provided for discussion and every effort will be made to include young investigators in the program. Additional funds are requested as contribution and support of an associated meeting, the Graduate Research Seminar in bioinorganic chemistry (GRS), set fo January 22-25, 1998. This conference is devoted to graduate students and postdoctorals in the field, who will come together to present lectures and scientific poster presentations in a three day meeting. There is an important session scheduled for Thursday evening, January 22, 1998, to overlap with the MIB-GRC, including mixing dinner, a keynote lecturer from the MIB-GRC, and a Poster Session with presentations from the GRS attendees. Topics planned for the 1998 GRS include Fe-S proteins, copper proteins, non-heme Fe proteins and metal-nucleic acid interactions.
