Architects H. Anthony Wheeler and Frank Sproson, and how they responded to the idea of architectural modernity in post-war Scotland.

My thesis will examine the work of the architects H. Anthony Wheeler and Frank Sproson, and how they responded to the idea of architectural modernity in post-war Scotland. In particular, I plan to approach how their post-war housing adhered to the planning vision set out by Frank Mears in his 1946 survey of Fife and the 1948 'A Regional Plan for Central and South East Scotland'. Active in Scotland between the 1950s and 1980s, Wheeler and Sproson was a leading architectural practice which won 19 Saltire Awards and Commendations, and 12 Civic Trust Awards and Commendations. Their work ranges from large institutional buildings down to individual houses and housing schemes. The practice's archive of over 1,300 post-war projects is housed at Historic Environment Scotland, and is rare in its completeness and integrity as a single national collection. With such an extensive archive, my thesis on Wheeler and Sproson would be best studied through a comparative and analytical assessment of their physical structures in relation to the archival evidence. Much of the archival collection will demonstrate how far the firm complied with the planning policy documentation of the time. I am interested in developing a pragmatic approach to research; taking on qualitative, quantitative and empirical research methods to better understand the complexity of the topic. I will also use a holistic approach to examining Wheeler and Sproson's Fife projects. As well as assessing their architecture from a planning and housing perspective, I will view it under the light of a social, economic, cultural and political context. It is hoped that this project will help reshape understanding of the post-war architectural history of Scotland and Britain through encouraging debate on the part of academics and the public into how the styles of the era are perceived today. I will conclude the thesis by curating an exhibition on Wheeler and Sproson and their notable projects.
