Responding to Reverdie: The garden across medieval France and Italian textual, visual and material culture c.1160-1500

My project will explore the toposof the enclosed garden as it appears in medieval art, litereature and material culture, where it takes on metatextual significance, becoming a space where artists, poets and other craftspeople can comment on and push boundaries of genre and medium to contribute to a broad Franco-Italian cultural discourse largely concerned with nature and artifice. I intend to emphasise the materiality of this garden space and its appearance in texts, illuminated manuscript miniatures, caskets, mirror-cases and textiles as a unified phenomenon that requires a new interdisciplinary approach that also crosses linguistic barriers.
