The project analyses the presentation of incest and bestiality in Ovid's Metamorphoses, exploring how widely-held societal beliefs are encoded in narratives of extreme sexual taboo. It asks how and why Ovid manipulated his mythographic sources to give incest and bestiality heightened prominence, whilst maintaining a powerful emotional distaste for them. It uncovers how taboo is a focus of fascination, pervading cultutal artefacts like the Metamorphoses, and of horror, being the theme of some of Ovid's most traumatic narratives. This project is grounded in a strong theoretical framework and contributes to the tradition of Ovidian scholarship and interdiscplinary taboo studies.
