Translating and adapting devotion in the Mirror of Holy Church: from Anglo-Norman to Middle English

My project aims to explore a selection of the late 14th c. and 15th c. Middle English translations ofthe Mirour de Seynte Eglyse, looking into the transmission of beliefs and devotional practices acrosslanguages, socio-cultural circles and textual contexts. Many of the copies of the Mirror of Holy Churchhave not been edited and require a critical and thorough comparative study. Several scholars havestressed the need for further research on the Mirror, which offers a real insight into the question ofdevotional practises in late fourteenth- and fifteenth-century England, as well as the question ofheterodoxy in religious writings. My research would involve looking at the process of translation andadaption of those texts within their wider literary tradition but also within their direct literary andcodicological context. This would give us a better comprehension of the place of the Mirror among thecorpus of vernacular religious writing and its politics
