Initially associated with slaves, servants, and sailors in the West Indies, rum was transformed into a product imbued with national and imperial connotations over the 'long eighteenth century.' Focussing on London and Bristol, this thesis will demonstrate that English seamen were key to such a process. Their exposure to a world beyond English shores facilitated a level of cross-cultural exchange amongst plebeian communities, which ultimately catalysed a shift in consumption habits across differing social and economic groups, combining notions of national identity with rugged masculinity to create a uniquely 'British Atlantic' product.Key Themes:History of Drinking/IntoxicantsGenderSpaceBritish Atlantic HistorySocial and Cultural History
