Northern Perspectives: community-based monitoring for tracing environmental change in the Canadian Arctic

Aims and Objectives Aim 1: Enhancement of CBM strategies, methodologies and deliverables to help inform community members of climate change impacts and adaptation planning. Objectives: Identify short and long-term climate change adaptation research priorities. Co-produce research questions and methodology with Tuktoyaktuk community members. Enhance data interpretation, presentation, and computer skills of Tuktoyaktuk community members. Incorporate Indigenous youth from the Tuktoyaktuk community into the research process. Improve Indigenous knowledge sharing between different generations of the Tuktoyaktuk community. Aim 2: Enhancement of long-term CBM towards climate change adaptation and community relocation. Objectives:Develop a tangible tool that can be used by the Tuktoyaktuk to identify suitable locations for infrastructure development (e.g. interactive hazard map). Collect high quality environmental data at locations susceptible to climate impacts. Develop and validate low-cost field equipment and tools that can be left with the Tuktoyaktuk community to monitor long-term landscape changes. Provide the Tuktoyaktuk community with full access to data. Encourage Tuktoyaktuk community members to use data they collect to make evidence informed decisions for community infrastructure relocation.
