Women Prophets, Religion, and Travel in Early Modern England and wider Europe, c.1600-1700

This thesis reconsiders religion and mobility in texts written by women prophets inseventeenth-century England, as well as the physical and intellectual mobility of thesewomen and the texts themselves. Tracking the journeys of Protestant women acrossregional and national borders in seventeenth-century England and wider Europe, it willexamine geographical travel as a crucial vector in the transmission of prophecy via printedand oral culture, as women prophets travelled to publishing houses as well as publicforums. By doing so, it illuminates the gendered forms taken by the relations betweenmobility, religion, and textual production in mid-seventeenth century Protestant cultures.
