Ionic liquids are unusual molecules, which are salts and simultaneously liquid at room temperature. The interest in ionic liquids is around their use as sustainable green replacements for volatile organics, as well as other high energy processes. Whilst there are some restrictions on their chemical formulation, it is estimated that 10^6 options exist. However, very little is understood about the interactions between ILs and metals, although there is evidence that intelligent design of these solutions with metals can lead to desirable properties and capabilities. Two examples are: 1) the controlled synthesis of metal particles, with the potential to replace existing high-energy processes, and 2) for use in battery applications. This project will seek to understand the underpinning chemistry resulting from the interaction of different potential IL constituents with metal solids and ions. This project will use a breadth of techniques to measure changes to the aqueous-IL-metal solutions. This includes physical property measurements density, viscosity, and surface tension. Key chemical properties including pH and conductivity will also be recorded. To probe the chemical speciation, the use of NMR will be employed. Taken together, all of this will be used to make synchrotron applications to further study the bonding structures. Finally, the use of electrochemical techniques to understand the relationship will also be employed. A holistic approach, with this range of techniques, is the only way to gain a complete picture allowing us to understand and therefore create ideal combinations for applications of interest.
