This PhD project aims to develop novel micro-bolometers for an infrared (IR) sensing platform. The project is part of an EPSRC funded Programme Grant, involving researchers from the Universities of Southampton, Sheffield, the University Hospital Southampton and the National Oceanography Centre, with the goal to demonstrate an integrated IR sensing platform. The currently available IR devices are realised in bulk optics and detectors, which significantly limits their use outside the laboratory. In this PhD project, we aim to develop low-cost, high performance, silicon photonics chip-scale detectors (bolometers) that will operate in the near- to mid-infrared wavelength region, and such devices will be used to measure the infrared light absorption by a range of biological and chemical molecules.
