Finding the Voice of the Child Patient: The Stannington Children's Hospital, 1920-1980.

The Stannington Sanatorium was England's first Tuberculosis Sanatorium specially designed forchildren. Through an innovative amalgamation of oral history, visual culture studies, archivalresearch, and material culture analysis, this project recovers the voice of the child patient andprovides a new analysis of an important medical site. By focusing specifically on the childpatient, this project is a watershed moment in studying the voice of an often overlookedcategory of patient. This case study approach illuminates the importance of place and space incontemporary treatment and memory, with a unique focus on the voice of the child patient.
