Radical Film Collectives Then and Now: Space, Time and Experience Across 1970s and Contemporary British Film Collectives

In the 1970s, independent British film collectives utilised collaborative production and alternativeexhibition practices to make films about, and in support of, working-class, feminist and blackpolitical struggles. Likewise, contemporary film collectives utilise similar practices, alongside digitaldistribution and exhibition methods, to support contemporary struggles. However, research onboth periods of collectives is limited and primarily centres textual analysis of individual film-textsover the decidedly social processes of collectives' practices. The proposed research's primary aim isto ask: what practices and organisational forms did/do 1970s and contemporary film collectivesutilise and what was/is their political roles? Thus, the project will make a threefold contribution tothe field. Firstly, the research will establish a previously untold historical account of the socialpractices and organisation of both 1970s and contemporary collectives. Secondly, the research willdevelop a novel approach to radical film collectives in centring spatial/temporal/social experienceas constitutive of cinematic politics over the production and reception of textual meaning. Finally,in posing a non-linear historical relation, the research will contrast these histories to envisionpossible futures in which emergent forms of digital and collective film might learn from pastcollectives to re-energise an alternative British film culture.
