Understanding the experiences of UK-based peer/community-based researchers navigating co-production within academically-led health research.

My research question is: what are the experiences of UK-based peer researchers (PR) navigating co-production within academically-led health research? My objectives are to:(1) describe how peer researchers are used in research pertaining to long-term health conditions and issues of social marginalisation e.g. HIV, mental health, sickle cell disease, and experiences of homelessness (method: scoping review);(2) understand how UK-based PR models are implemented within academic health research (methods: case studies; semi-structured interviews; autoethnography);(3) develop a Healthtalk module on the experiences of UK-based PRs; and(4) develop a toolkit detailing core principles for implementing UK-based peer research models.Peer researchers use their lived experience of a health condition and/or contextual understanding of a social or geographical community to improve meaningful involvement, including improving diverse recruitment and dissemination. Community-based research methods are being increasingly promoted. The NIHR Reaching Out programme encourages new public involvement and engagement (NIHR, 2021). Participatory Action Research, specifically peer research, is an approach to achieve meaningful patient involvement. I am interested in the ethical and practical considerations of these models and the experiences of key stakeholders, including the peer researchers, wider study teams and recruited study participants.
