RESPIRATORY VIRUSES IN PEDIATRIC PATIENTS PRESENTING TO THE EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. Human Metapheumovirus (hMPV) has recently been shown to be an important etiologic agent in common presentations of respiratory infections in children. The epidemiology of hMPV is, however, not well understood. The goal of this study is to define the epidemiology and clinical manifestations of hMPV. The study has three primary specific aims: Specific Aim 1: To determine the prevalence of hMPV in the population of infants and children seeking care for acute respiratory infections in the emergency dept. Specific Aim 2: To compare the severity of disease for children with hMPV with the severity of disease of children with other causes of respiratory infections. The null hypothesis is that there is no clinically significant difference. Specific Aim 3: To determine the prevalence of hMPV amoung infants with bronchiolitis. The hypothesis is that incidence of hMPV is highter among patients with bronchiolitis than those with non-bronchiolitis respiratory infecti
