PATIENT ACTIVATION INTERVENTION TO IMPROVE CARE OF PATIENTS WITH OSTEOPOROSIS

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The objective of the current study is to determine whether a patient activation consisting of mailing patients with dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scan results plus educational information about osteoporosis suplemented by a follow-up telephone call can improve the care of individuals diagnosed with osteoporosis on screening DEXA scan. A randomized, single-blind control trial will be conducted to assess the impact of this intervention on three complementary measures of osteoporosis care: 1) use of antiresorptive therapy, calcium supplementation, and adoption of lifestyle modification; 2) knowledge about osteoporosis; and 3) satisfaction with osteoporosis care.
