This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Chronic recurrent abdominal pain (RAP) in children, a common, but perplexing problem that frequently becomes irritable bowel syndrome in young adults. It appears that many cases of RAP related to carbohydrate maldigestion and development a screening non-radioactive breath test will be helpful in management of RAP. This GCRC protocol supports development of a non-radioactive starch breath test and provides the basis for a subsequent and broader National Institute of Health proposal. If successfully calibrated, the 13C-breath-test could replace the more expensive endoscopic procedures currently in use. It could bring more specificity to the diagnosis of recurrent abdominal pain (RAP) in children.
