OXIDANT STRESS AND ALLERGIC ASTHMA

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Hypothesis: The oxidant stress associated with allergic asthma is regulated by the expression of antioxidant enzymes and dietary oxidants. Aim 1: To test the hypothesis that oxidant stress and ariway responses to allergen in allergic asthmatics are regulated by the genetic variants of glutathione S-transferase (GSTP1). Aim 2: To test the hypothesis that vitamin E will inhibit oxidative stress in the lung and thereby modulate nonspecific bronchial hyperactivity and the airway responses to specific allergen in allergic asthmatics.
