THE EFFECT OF PROLACTIN ON LACTATION

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Prolactin is critical to lactation, but its precise role is unclear. Several lactogenic agents have been documented to increase milk production, however, lactation can also be reestablished in the absence of medication, there may be a significant placebo effect in study participation (27) and the medications used previously may have tranquilizing properties, thereby affecting milk production in other ways. Therefore, prolactin will be administered in a randomized, double blind, placebo controlled study to determine its effect on milk production. Education and a placebo effect can be evaluated in the control group and will be compared to the direct effect of prolactin. Further, the relationship between prolactin levels and volume of milk production can be determined in this study in which prolactin will be administered in a controlled manner and milk production will be recorded.
