This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
Investigations of the genetic basis of cardiac dysfunction, using transgenic mice, require accurate characterization of ventricular function. High spatial resolution MRI of greater than 16 time frames per cardiac cycle is difficult to achieve in a short MRI imaging session. Our hypothesis is that rapid acquisition, high temporal resolution SPECT has sufficient spatial resolution to accurately characterize 3 dimensional measurements of cardiac function. The aim of this pilot study is to correlate rapid, high temporal resolution SPECT measurements of ventricular function (LVEF and RVEF from end-diastolic and end-systolic volumes) with those obtained by MRI. If rapid SPECT can accurately characterize cardiac function, an algorithm for echocardiography primary screening, SPECT for secondary functional characterization, and MRI for high spatial resolution measurements will be proposed to fully characterize cardiac dysfunction in transgenic models of heart failure. This preliminary data would be used in a grant proposal to support further development of these techniques.
