This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
Although strong evidence has confirmed that the amount of prosthesis retention is an important factor for patient satisfaction, little is known about the impact of specific retentive strengths of implant attachment systems on patient satisfaction. The Locator attachment system is available in three different retentive strengths and is widely used to stabilize implant-retained overdentures in the mandible. This within-subject crossover study was designed to examine patient satisfaction with three different retentive strengths of the Locator attachment to stabilize implant-retained overdentures in the mandible. Forty patients scheduled to receive implant-retained mandibular overdentures using the Locator attachment system will participate in this study. Using a random distribution, each patient's prosthesis will be sequentially fitted with each of three Locator attachment retentive strengths, each for a period of one month. Patients' satisfaction with the existing prosthesis and with the implant-retained overdenture using different retentive anchor strengths will be obtained at various time points using identical questionnaires. The implants' angulation in reference to the occlusal plane, as well as the stability and retention of the prosthesis, will be evaluated by one examiner and correlated to the patients' responses.
