The purpose of the FAIR Assessment of NHGRI Resources (FARE) is to support NHGRI in performing an evaluation of the high value community genomics resources, and other data or software resources that it has funded extramurally with respect to the Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable (FAIR; https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4792175/ ) principles and Desired Characteristics of Data Repositories (DCDRs, https://www.whitehouse.gov/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/05-2022-Desirable-Characteristics-of-Data-Repositories.pdf) for Federally Funded Research and identifying approaches and recommendations for NHGRI to address gaps and challenges. A community-based strategy will be used for establishing sustainable best practices for a FAIR data ecosystem, to enhance the NHGRI extramural genomics data and software resource ecosystem.
Tasks will be performed in two Phases.
• Phase 1 will entail implementing a Self-Assessment Tool (SAT) to assist NHGRI with the assessment of how the genomics resources (data and software) that NHGRI has been funding extramurally adhere to the FAIR and DCDR standards as well as challenges in adhering to these standards. Interviews with a subset of resource owners (up-to 9) to allow more detailed understanding of such aspects will be performed. A report of the evaluation of these assessments will be performed.
• Phase 2 (optional) will entail organizing a workshop in collaboration with NHGRI staff to engage researchers, institutional leaders, NIH staff, and NHGRI resources’ project teams to identify and establish community-driven activities, best practices and strategies to promote a FAIR NHGRI data and analysis ecosystem.
