Sudbury Neutrino Observatory Activities at UBC and TRIUMF

The Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO) is a solar neutrino detector located in INCO's Creighton Nickel Mine near Sudbury, Ontario.  In 2002 SNO solved the longstanding "solar neutrino problem" by demonstrating that electron neutrinos produced inside the Sun change into other flavours of neutrino on their way to Earth.  This discovery requires neutrinos to have non-zero mass and new properties.  The UBC/TRIUMF SNO group is closely involved in all aspects of the physics analysis of SNO's data, especially day-night analyses, searches for periodic variations in the solar neutrino flux, atmospheric neutrino analysis, and precise measurement of the solar neutrino mixing parameters.  This grant supports the activities of the UBC/TRIUMF group over the final phase of the SNO experiment.
