The detailed features in starlight are analyzed to determine the kinds of motions found in the atmospheres of stars, how rapidly stars spin, what sort of magnetic fields are generated, and how fast the stars are moving in space. From these measurements, we learn about the physics of convection and pulsation in stars, how rotation combines with convection to make magnetic fields, and how those magnetic fields cause dark spots on the surfaces of stars. We can also observe the longer term variations in the magnetic fields, similar to the 11-year magnetic cycle seen for the sun. This stellar information may help us understand how much the variation in the power from the sun contributes to global warming.
