Light source and shutter for optical analysis of neural responses

We are requesting a xenon light source and shutter system to incorporate to our existing fluorescence microscope and data acquisition system. This workstation will be used for investigating sensory neurobiology and neuropathology. The Zielinski lab will use live cell imaging for investigating how olfactory subsystems function in fish so that specific odors are able to generate appropriate behavioural responses. This type of analysis will directly show which olfactory sensory neuron subtypes respond to pheromones and other biologically relevant odours; and how cells regulate these responses in two environmentally important fish, the sea lamprey and the round goby. The Higgs lab will use a live cell imaging strategy to investigate how cells in the auditory sensory structures of fish are able to encode auditory information. The Zhang lab will apply live cell imaging for spatial-temporal investigation of how the mammalian brain is able to process auditory information with regards to novelty detection. The Porter lab will investigate how neural activity is affected by disease.
