Since 2009, investigations and experiments have been undertaken at the Centre de technologies avancées (CTA) - a partnership between the Université de Sherbrooke (UdeS) and Bombardier Recreational Products (BRP) - of a functional prototype demonstrator of a 9.9 horsepower (7.4 kW) hydrogen-fueled, direct-injected two-stroke engine. The resulting achievements include a best point gross indicated thermal efficiency of 42.4% and exhaust emissions that can meet the most stringent regulations in the world - a voluntary 5-Star rating by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) that limits HC+NOx (sum of unburned hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides) to 2.5 g/kWh.
