Corrosion is a serious problem facing steel reinforced concrete infrastructure worldwide. Fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) reinforcing bars have emerged as a viable alternative to steel rebar for concrete structures exposed to corrosive environments. Glass FRP (GFRP) and carbon FRP (GFRP) reinforcing bars have been used in a number of field applications in Canada. A promising new composite reinforcement comprised of basalt fibres (BFRP) is currently under development. Basalt is a natural fibre that is environmentally friendly. Basalt FRP has higher strength and modulus than Glass FRP and is more cost effective than Carbon FRP. This makes Basalt FRP bars an excellent alternative reinforcement to existing products for construction industry. This study aims to examine the feasibility of a new BFRP bar as reinforcement for concrete structures and will provide benchmark data on the mechanical properties of BFRP bars which are of primary importance for reinforced concrete: tensile strength and modulus of elasticity, bond to concrete and transverse shear (dowel) strength. The proposed research is in an area that is of high economic and technological importance to the Canada's infrastructure. A better understanding of the mechanical properties of Basalt FRP bars will allow the construction industry to use this reinforcement in new structures; and will enable engineers to design long lasting and more sustainable infrastructure.
