Electric utility companies depend very much on simulating the performance of the electric power system with various types of software, because field tests cannot easily be done. There are software tools for studying the normal flow of power through the transmission lines. There are also computer programs for simulating disturbances to the power system caused by external events such as lightning strokes, or internal events caused by switching etc. The transients caused by such disturbances can be very fast, in the microsecond or millisecond range. They are simulated with "electromagnetic transients" programs. The disturbances can also be slow, in the second and minute range. They are simulated with "stability" programs.
