Conjugated polymers have received a lot of attention since they combine the best features of metals or inorganic materials with those of synthetic polymers. This synergy not only makes these materials useful in existing devices but also creates completely new opportunities. In our research projects, we want to investigate new electroactive and photoactive oligomers and polymers for applications in plastic electronics. More precisely, in a first project, we want to develop new synthetic strategies for the so-called green synthesis of new conjugated polymers. This approach should not only create already known polymers in an easier, faster, cheaper, and cleaner way but should also allow the synthesis of novel well-defined polymers not available through traditional polymerization reactions. These polymers should be particularly interesting for the development of flexible and low-cost solar cells. In another project, we intend to develop novel building blocks for conjugated polymers. In particular, we will focus on new sulfur derivatives (i.e. thioketones) of thienopyrrolediones, diketopyrrolopyrroles, and isoindigo-like units. In parallel, we intend to prepare and investigate amphiphilic oligomers and polymers derived from diketopyrrolopyrrole and isoindigo-like units. Langmuir-Blodgett technique will be utilized to prepare various thin films with different structural orientation. This work should shed some light on the charge transport and energy transfer within conjugated molecules. Finally, in a third project, we want to develop new polymeric biosensors for the direct detection of cancer biomarkers such as DNA hypermethylation. These tools could also be employed to directly detect the present of various bacteria in water. These three original research projects on different conjugated oligomers and polymers should lead to a rational design of a new generation of electroactive and photoactive materials with optimized physical properties. All these studies should therefore enlarge the possibilities of applications of organic materials and should therefore benefit to both the industry and the public.
