The proposed activity (duration: 6 months) will investigate the design parameters of the greenhouse system in order to develop a new kind of greenhouse structure viable for the Northern Territories in extreme weather conditions. The present study will first carry out thermal analysis for energy calculations of Heating, Ventilation and Air-conditioning system (HVAC) of the structure. It will provide necessary data such as inside temperature to run numerical simulations in the next stage. In the next stage, 3-dimensional computer model of the greenhouse will be built. Numerical simulations will be performed to identify very important design parameters, for example, air flow, temperature distribution and moisture level inside the greenhouse with various boundary conditions. Such analysis will help to decide on various components (spacing, light intensity, temperature, humidity level etc.) and optimize design for maximum output. Thus the numerical analysis will serve as a guiding tool for improving the performance of the greenhouse system as well as a foundation for more detailed analysis for future research and development. In the next phase, a small scale prototype greenhouse structure will be developed and testing will be carried out and numerical simulation results will be verified with actual results. REMASCO, will partner with UoG in the proposed study, and use the results in investigating the business case for developing the optimized green house system. Project like this will allow diversifying Canadian economy by maximizing the value of natural resources and stimulating green investment, green innovation and green jobs. Economy develops as more employment opportunities, energy efficiency, fresh food supply for local people, and environment friendly technology yields benefits to Northern Territories' residents and businesses.
