Application of Galactomyces for valorization of biofuel co-products

Biofuels like biodiesel and ethanol are generally considered to be a cleaner alternative to petroleum fuels, and Canadian biofuel production has been growing in recent years. Additional economic and environmental benefits can be gained by fully utilizing lower value or waste co-products generated during biofuel production. We propose to use a newly described yeast to add value to glycerol from biodiesel production and stillage from ethanol production. These biofuel co-products will be used as the main source of nutrients for growing the yeast, and the ability of the yeast to produce valuable products will be evaluated. One such product is single cell oil, and this oil can have further uses in the biofuel, nutritional or cosmetic industries.
