Prices of the grains corn and wheat, and soybean meal traditionally the most widely used energy and amino acid sources, respectively, in poultry diets in Canada, have been soaring. Thus, a need exists for cheap alternatives to manage feed cost. Camelina meal, a co-product of vegetable oil extraction from camelina (oilseed crop of Brassica family) may serve as partial alternative to the grains and soybean meal in poultry diets in Canada. However, camelina meal has a high content of fibre. Dietary fibre is poorly digested by poultry and may decrease nutrient utilization. There is limited information on the nutritive value of the camelina meal for poultry. Also, there is lack of information on the effect of supplementing fiber-degrading enzymes to diets based on the camelina meal on nutrient utilization by poultry. Thus, the objective of this project is to characterize the nutritive value of the camelina meal for broilers, and determine the effect adding fiber-degrading enzymes in diets based on camelina meal on nutrient utilization by broilers. The methodology will include determining: (1) the standardized ileal digestibility of amino acids and metabolizable energy value of camelina meal for broilers; and (2) the effect of adding fiber-degrading enzymes to camelina meal-based diets for broilers on the nutrient digestibility and metabolizable energy value. Data from this research will be used to optimize utilization of camelina meal in formulating poultry feeds. The subsequent increase in utilization of camelina meal as feedstuffs for poultry in Canada will reduce cost to produce poultry meat and eggs. The results from this project will also benefit the Canadian Biosystems Inc. by providing solid evidence about the efficacy of their fiber-degrading enzymes with regard to improving the nutritional value of camelina meal.
