英文摘要
We are applying for funds to establish the Queen's Arctic Water Laboratory (QuAWLity) at the Cape Bounty Arctic Watershed Observatory (CBAWO) on south-central Melville Island, Nunvavut. Human-induced climate change is altering polar watersheds at unprecedented rates. By the end of this century, temperatures in the Canadian High Arctic are predicted to increase 2.8-7.8°C relative to 1980-1999. This amplified climate change has important ramifications for the stability of High Arctic permafrost landscapes, and the supply and quality of freshwater. There is a great need to understand the processes that drive water quality in arctic watersheds, and how climate and permafrost change will affect these processes and downstream ecosystems.
