My research program involves the design and analysis of numerous types of cryptographic algorithms and protocols, especially those suited to emerging technologies. I have been actively involved in developing cryptographic algorithms for many of these new environments, and I will continue this line of research in the future. Some specific examples of my current research are summarized now. 1. I am involved in the design of protocols for RFID (radio frequency identification) that utilize some new cryptographic approaches involving polynomial reconstruction with noisy data. These protocols have the innovative feature that a central server can compute a tag's ID rather than search for it though a large database. 2. I study authentication and related questions in a "two-channel" setting, where there is a insecure wide-band network, as well as an authenticated narrow-band network that is often termed a "manual channel". Such protocols has interesting applications the setting of ad hoc networks where there is no public-key infrastructure, but where a human can play an active role by copying a short string from one device to another. 3. I design cryptographic algorithms suitable for securing wireless sensor networks. Sensor nodes have very limited power and computational capabilities and a common strategy is to store a set of secret keys in each node before the nodes are deployed. Nodes can store only a limited number of keys, and it is a challenging question to balance connectivity of the network against security in the presence of an adversary that may compromise a subset of the nodes and read the keys stored in them. My solutions use combinatorial techniques to optimize the competing goals of connectivity and resilience and secure these networks after deployment.
