Les fibres naturelles comme celles du lin ou de chanvre proviennent de ressources renouvelables abondantes et
sont recyclables et biodégradables. Elles présentent des propriétés intrinsèques remarquables.
Protec-Style, une compagnie québécoise, s'intéresse au lin canadien et souhaite promouvoir son utilisation dans
l'industrie des composites comme renforts mécaniques. Pour ce faire, elle doit réaliser l'extraction des fibres de
la tige du lin et aussi rendre compatibles leurs fibres afin d'optimiser l'adhésion à l'interface fibre-matrice et
ainsi assurer un transfert de charge adéquat fibre-matrice . Elle désire collaborer avec l'Université Laval pour
élaborer des procédés d'extraction verts des fibres de lin fiables et économiques ainsi que l'utilisation d'une
approche enzymatique pour l'extraction et le traitement de surface des fibres de lin.
Les objectifs de ce projet visent particulièrement à mettre au point un procédé de déstructuration des fibres de
lin en utilisant le CO2 supercritique et à utiliser différentes enzymes pour l'extraction et le traitement de surface
des fibres pour les rendre compatibles pour leur adhésion interfaciale.
La mise au point de techniques d'extraction économiques et écologiques des fibres naturelles, comme celles du
lin, aidera non seulement Protec-Style à se positionner en tant que chef de file dans ce domaine mais répondra
aussi aux attentes du développement durable où les impératifs d'économie d'énergie, la préservation des
ressources et les préoccupations environnementales amèneront les industriels à rechercher des solutions 'vertes'
et compétitives.
