The research team of the Occupational Biomechanics and Ergonomics Lab (OBEL) of McGill University are
initiating a collaboration with Musicmotion(TM) Technology inc., a Montreal-based company that has recently
acquired a not yet commercialized exercise device currently called the Cyclopole that can be clipped to pedals
of stationary bicycles to provide a means for exercise of the upper limbs. This assistive device is portable and
makes efficient use of space in the gym or at home, and provides a way to enhance whole-body exercise that
could be used for sports training, injury prevention and rehabilitation purposes. However there is a first need to
precisely quantify the muscle loads induced by a typical exercise bout with this device. Without the ability to
provide objective data identifying which muscles are used, and at what intensity, during specific exercise bouts
with the Cyclopole, the marketability of the device to potential clients would be significantly affected.
Therefore, the company needs to partner with a research team that can provide tools and methods to obtain this
scientific evidence. Using state-of-the-art technology for muscle activity measurement and analysis, the
research team will conduct a study with healthy adult volunteers to deliver typical muscle load profiles during
exercise using the Cyclopole. This illustrated information could be incorporated into packages to present ways
to optimize the use of the Cyclopole as part of effective exercise regimens. Musicmotion(TM) Technology inc.
is a young Canadian company committed to making an impact on the very competitive fitness technology
market. This rapidly expanding industry has great potential to leverage technological innovation to the benefit
of human health at the rehabilitation and even at the prevention stages. By incorporating technology as part of
exercise prescription and promotion efforts rather than as part of sedentary habits, developments by companies
such as Musicmotion(TM) Technology inc. could help save the Canadian health care system billions of dollars.
