Water resources are very important to humans and ecosystems. Only 2.5% of the Earth's water is freshwater,
and less than 0.3% of all freshwater is in rivers, lakes, and the atmosphere but 70% of the freshwater used by
humans goes to irrigation and agriculture to ensure enough food is produced. Due to large population growth
and climate change, the common past perception that water was an infinite resource is no longer valid. In
reality, many countries (including California in the U.S.A.) are facing a water crisis. Our industry partner
InteliRain Inc is at the forefront of innovations in designing high efficiency sprinkler system which is capable
of applications to large landscapes. The developed system produces excellent uniformity distribution and uses
less water compared to most existing standard industry system. However, the performance of the InteliRain
system deteriorates significantly when it is tested in open field with wind. The goal of this project is to work
with our industry partner to improve the sprinkler design so that the attractive features are retained in the
presence of wind condition. The project will make a contribution to the sustainable management of water
resource, and helping the irrigation and agriculture industry in Alberta and Canada to find better ways to use
water more efficiently.
