Improved passive groundwater gas sampler

Although passive diffusion sampling for dissolved gases in groundwater is increasingly being used, most of the work has been conducted in shallow groundwater (i.e. less than 20 m below the water table). There are some energy industry related applications (including understanding fugitive gas migration around leaky petroleum wells, and monitoring groundwater around carbon capture and storage sites) that require more robust dissolved gas sampling approaches that are robust in deeper groundwater monitoring wells (e.g. up to 300 m below the water table). This grant seeks to i) test and select a variety of a diffusion membrane materials to optimizes relatively rapid gas diffusion and low water permeability (at high hydraulic pressures); ii) design and field test an improved gas diffusion sampler able to maintain watertight seals; and iii) testing of degree of degree of hydraulic seal required in a lightweight packer (deployed in a groundwater monitoring well above the PGD sampler) to prevent buoyant free gas loss from the well.
