We are making a case for a 3D Stereo Microscope imaging system (VIC-3D™ Micro) from Correlated Solutions, Inc. to accurately measure, in-situ, displacements and strains of microscopic composite specimens which is unattainable with any other available equipment. The proposed equipment is the only commercially-available digital imagining system able to remove complex non-radial optical distortions that can severely bias strain measurements and thus providing accurate data.
The requested equipment is highly needed to support the research programs of five co-applicants from four different Canadian universities (Ryerson, University of Toronto, University of Waterloo and University of Ontario Institute of Technology). The PIs are conducting high impact research involving characterization and modelling of new emerging composite materials used in many engineering applications where assessing the mechanical properties and progressive failure modes at different scales is a key challenge. Our strategy is to use the requested 3D Micro DIC System in conjunction with the applicant's infrared thermography camera test setup to have a more comprehensive and in-depth characterization of full-field stress/strain and damage evolution in composites at different scales. This can lead to breakthroughs in the applicants’ respective research programs because of the uniqueness of such test setup and its utilization.
The experimental component of the PIs’ respective research programs will provide the opportunity for 30 graduate students to be trained on the requested micro-imagining system, also providing them with a fundamental understanding of the complex mechanical behaviour of composite materials. Such skills are desirable for future engineering jobs, and for Canada's materials and manufacturing sector. In addition, since the PIs are involved in a number of ongoing collaborative research projects investigating other advanced materials for which the requested equipment may be used, additional HQP may also be trained.
