The main objective of the collaboration between uOttawa and GHD is to explore the structural implications of corrosion-relatedissues in concrete parking garage structures and to simulate their behaviour using commercial structural design softwarepackages. This will include a critical assessment of limit states criteria under long-term conditions, prediction of the structuralresponse of deteriorated elements, and evaluation of structural repair and rehabilitation techniques for service life extension. Theoverarching goal of this project is to develop a practical engineering approach, based on sound fundamental and scientificprinciples, to simulate the effects of damage in reinforced concrete structures that is appropriate for use in consulting and design firms, while simultaneously contributing towards advancing the current state of the art in the academic research community.Hence, efforts will be made to take advantage of widely available design software to simplify and streamline employee training and facilitate knowledge transfer, while considering realistic damage scenarios and fundamental principles of mechanics with an understanding of the underlying causes of deterioration. Although these approaches will be initially developed for parking garage structures, they could conceivably be later modified to account for other structure types such as buildings, bridges, dams, and other infrastructure.
