A surgical laser developed by an Ontario-based industrial partner could have additional capabilities to helpincrease its value in the operating room. By leveraging the expertise, track record, previous developments andinfrastructure of the academic partner, a new laser scalpel will be developed that is capable of deliveringspatially resolved pathology results to surgeons. Further development and integration with academic partner'sexisting technologies will result in a platform that can display information that can be used to classify tissue ashealthy or cancerous -- and subtype the tumour -- using a technique called mass spectroscopy. This molecularinformation can be displayed in real time to surgeons, guiding them to the areas of the tumour to be surgicallyremoved. This insight can transform how surgeons approach cancer surgeries, improving the health ofCanadians and increasing the value of the Canadian technology.
