As the climate becomes more unpredictable, we face increasing challenges in growing enough food and providing materials for a rapidly increasing population. Estimates from the UN predict that the world’s population will rise from 7 billion to 9.6 billion by mid-2050. These challenges require innovative solutions that will increase productivity from agriculture. To contribute to the next “Green Revolution”, we are developing strategies that will improve seed production and help protect crop plants from pests. The research programs of the applicant, Shelley Lumba and co-applicant, Peter McCourt, are geared towards developing genetic and chemical strategies to combat the most damaging weed of major food crops in Africa called
