Controlling the stability of genetic material to regulate biology*******The cellular decapping machinery controls the activity of genetic material (messenger RNA), which in turn serves as the template for the synthesis of proteins in many organisms. It helps regulate most, if not all, biological processes such as fat metabolism, germ cell development and many others. However, it is currently unclear as to how the mRNA decapping machinery interfaces with the numerous mRNAs in each living cell. We are studying how the mRNA decapping machinery interfaces with specific messenger RNAs, and how, once recruited, it targets a mRNA for degradation. We feel confident that our research program will provide important insights into how these fundamental mechanisms operate, and ultimately how they help regulate a variety of biological processes.**
