Angle Biosciences is an international company based in Toronto, Ontario that focuses on distributing liquid biopsy**technology through a variety of sensing platforms. Among their sensing products is a unique, patented technology**that allows researchers to identify markers in their samples in a compact, tabletop workstation known as the**Ziplex system. The technology uses an array of microscopic channels capable of binding target molecules as a**sample flows through them. Chemiluminescence (luminol) then releases light which is observed using a camera to**quickly and clearly indicate the positive result to the researcher. This system allows Angle to offer a sensing**workstation that delivers results faster than competitive technology with simple fluid handling. However, the**micropore silicon sensing element used in this system could be significantly improved through optimization of the**pore geometry. Increasing the light output of the sensing elements would result in a lower detection limit giving a**significant advantage to the device.**Professor John Sipe is an expert in optics and light-matter interactions with a wealth of experience in developing**simple models to guide the solution of complicated problems. The goal of this project will be to study the effects**of varying the geometry of the Ziplex system to optimize the system design and strengthen the output signal.**This will be accomplished by utilizing an analytic model to explore potential solutions before more robust**simulations are utilized to complete the optimization.
