Bacterial canker disease, caused by Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. michiganensis (Cmm) is one of the most serious diseases of tomato. The disease has caused substantial crop losses and become a serious concern for both field and greenhouse tomato production in many parts of the world, including Canada. Existing control strategies, such as seed treatment and chemical control, have shown only limited efficacy in controlling this disease. Thus, effective control strategies are urgently required. The Smith laboratory at McGill University has discovered several strains that show antagonistic activity against Cmm, and an anti-Cmm compound produced by one of these strains, Pseudomonas sp. 23S was isolated. Given the seriousness of the disease damages, this anti-Cmm compound, as well as the producing stain is great potential as a new effective control strategy for tomato bacterial canker. Lallemand has been interested in developing a product to control Cmm and has been looking for potential approaches. With Lallemand's expertise on strain production, scale-up, formulation and product development, success in the proposed work would allow a full effort to completely understand the potential of a technology based on Pseudomonas sp. 23S and eventual full deployment in the Canadian context. We propose to study the anti- Cmm compounds produced by Pseudomonas sp. 23S and to determine the best production method. The project will consist of elucidating the minimum inhibitory concentration of the anti-Cmm compound, studying the concentration of the compound during various incubation phases, and examining the effects of Cmm on the production of anti- Cmm compounds produced by Pseudomonas sp. 23S. This work will improve the sustainability and economics of Canadian tomato producers and give them further leadership in the North American tomato production market. The work will provide a deeper understanding of the newly discovered anti-Cmm compound produced by Pseudomonas sp. 23S and its best production method, leading to a broader collaboration between Lallemand and McGill University; one that will allow further utilization of biologicals and the development of new products in agriculture.
