Canada's forestry industry, worth over $32.7 billion in 2015, depends on productive forests, yet the**sustainability of this industry and the ecosystem services forests provide could be jeopardized by climate change. Climate change, including rising CO2 concentrations and temperatures, will be greatest at high latitudes, with warming of up to 10 °C predicted by the year 2100 in the boreal forest. Recent climate change has increased boreal tree growth in some parts of Canada, but suppressed tree growth or caused mortality in others. Understanding what drives these regional responses in forest productivity and carbon dynamics in northern Canada is particularly pressing for the Canadian Forest Service (CFS), whose mandate is to provide science and policy expertise, and advice on national forest sector issues. Understanding how rising CO2 and temperature will influence Canada's boreal forest, in particular how future carbon dynamics will respond to a changing future climate, is critical because it directly influences Canada's ability to meet international climate agreement commitments. If responses to warming and elevated CO2 vary among northern tree species, these differences in boreal forest responses to climate change may be due to variation in how tree species respond to climate change. This project will determine how elevated CO2 and temperatures affect the productivity of a diverse range of boreal tree species to determine the extent to which variation in forest growth and carbon uptake is determined by species-level variation in response to climate change. Our findings will be used by CFS to predict how the productivity and carbon dynamics of different tree species will be affected by climate change. These predictions will be used by CFS to guide public policy by informing mitigation, adaptation and forest management strategies for high latitude forests in Canada and inform estimates of future carbon dynamics of Canada's managed forest to meet Canada's international reporting requirements. ****
