Due to highly repetitive manual operations required in the prefabricated panelized home construction industry, the risk of developing work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) increases with increasing work demand. To reduce WMSDs, the industry partner wants to adjust their operation procedure and process, and workstation design, and to develop an ergonomically healthy working environment, as well as to improve their scheduling system, and improve productivity. These aims will be achieved through the following objectives. First, we will collect data through observation of operational tasks and attendant motions in the current manufacturing process. Second, we will propose changes to scheduling and plan a preventive maintenance system to help improve the production flow and productivity. Third we will develop a fuzzy-logic-based human motion analysis to create an ergonomical work environment. Finally we will develop an interactive 3D visualization platform with system integration for optimization of recommendations, modification, and improvement. Rapid and efficient workstation redesign and layout modification can be achieved by applying the proposed 3D visualized automated system, which will aid in demonstrating the potential of the manufacturing-based construction in Canada to produce residential buildings with higher quality in the improved productivity and healthier working environment. With the collaboration between the university team and the industry partner, the highly qualified personnel (HQP) will gain both theoretical expertise and practical experience in terms of simulation, ergonomics, and productivity assessment. Using ergonomics-based human motion and productivity analysis to improve workplace productivity and reduce WMSDs and claims will help Canadian manufacturing-based construction industries remain competitive through healthier work environments and subsequent improved reputation amongst workers.
