The proposed Canada Research Chair investigates factors regulating the transport of carbon and pollutants from the surface to the deep ocean in the Northwest Atlantic. The deep ocean takes up carbon generated by fossil fuel burning, and pollutants like oil or plastic are carried to the seafloor. Predicting the sequestration of carbon by the ocean and the distribution of pollutants like oil within the ocean, is an essential prerequisite to mediate anthropogenic impacts, like global change or oil spills. Research on the transport pathways of carbon and pollutants in the ocean is cutting edge and addresses a societal need.
