Under the Paris Agreement, Canada has committed to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 30% below 2005 levels by 2030. The development of a diversified energy portfolio including continuous power production from renewable resources, such as geothermal energy, is essential to meet this commitment. This is particularly important for heating needs where a stable supply is essential to the security of Canadians. The goal of this project is to acquire new knowledge fundamental to the development of geothermal resources and technologies to reduce the use of fossil fuels, mainly for heating buildings. The drilling of geothermal exploration boreholes to eventually produce heat with a geothermal fluid of moderate temperature (30 to 100°C) is targeted here to acquire new knowledge and create opportunities to expand the geothermal industry. Two partners from the government and a private company have expressed interest to participate in this project to accelerate at the Canadian scale the exploration of geothermal resources. Hydrothermal and petrothermal systems will be studied, in fractured environments and sedimentary basins, in the North to reduce diesel fuel dependency in a remote community and in the South to replace natural gas. This will be done through the characterization of petrophysical properties in favourable sites, which is essential to better understand heat transfer mechanisms that affect the sustainability of geothermal resources found at intermediate depth (0.5 to 3 km). From this, new technologies can be developed to ensure optimal exploitation, for example with ground heat exchanger systems. The expected results are the development of a new geothermal industry that can locally replace the oil industry and contribute to the global reduction of greenhouse gases.
